Chelsea’s shawl – knitting for a greater good

  • Knitters are very generous people, and we love to support good causes.  This particular one resonates strongly with me because feeling safe when running is something that I take very seriously, as well as crimes against women.  I have been knitting with Dream in Color yarn lately, as they have generously supported the Book with their beautiful yarn.  So, when I saw this post from a wonderful yarn store in my area, I knew that I had to participate in this project.  Here is the basic post from For Yarn’s Sake.

Chelsea’s Shawl

On a sunny Thursday afternoon in 2010, Chelsea King disappeared after setting out for a run in a San Diego community park. Law enforcement and thousands of volunteers searched for days, until they finally found her body in a shallow grave just off the trail she was running on. Chelsea was the victim of a horrific crime committed by a convicted sex offender who later confessed and plead guilty to taking Chelsea’s life.

But Chelsea’s life is remembered as much more than a victim.  She was a beautiful, kind soul who loved and was loved by all of those around her.  She was the kind of girl that everyone agreed was going to make a difference in the world.  When her life was cut so horribly short her family felt there must be something they could do to carry on her spirit. So, they created Chelsea’s Light Foundation.  Their mission is to unite and lead people who are passionate about protecting children and inspiring positive change in their communities.  Chelsea’s Light has been instrumental in passing stricter sentencing laws for sex offenders and providing outstanding peer mentoring programs and scholarships for young adults – young people who embody qualities that Chelsea possessed, including perseverance, enthusiasm, empathy and a never give up attitude.  Youth of tomorrow who’ve already decided to dedicate their lives to making the world a better place.

One of Chelsea’s favorite mantras was “Go big or go home.”  When approached by Chelsea’s mom to create a colorway in her daughter’s honor, Dream In Color jumped at the chance, embraced Chelsea’s tenet and took it a step further.  They’ve teamed up with uber-designer Stephen West to create the Chelsea’s Shawl Kit.

Each kit contains Stephen’s wildly popular “Akimbo” pattern, which he graciously donated, along with 2 skeins of Smooshy dyed in exclusive hues inspired by Chelsea’s favorite colors – Sunflower Yellow, Tangerine Orange and Cornflower Blue.  The color and design combination reflects beautifully Chelsea’s fun-loving, eclectic sense of style.

The best part? Dream In Color is donating $10 to Chelsea’s Light Foundation from the sale of each kit.  And For Yarn’s Sake is adding to that by donating an additional $5 for each kit sold in our store.  Help us promote this wonderful foundation and its work, while creating a fantastic scarf!

Chelsea’s Scarf Kits are available in 2 color combinations – Sunflower Yellow and Tangerine or Sunflower and Cornflower (shown in the picture here).  Support a great foundation and knit a gorgeous shawl.
